Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) was just 24 when her first novel, The Loving Spirit, came out and she found herself an overnight success.
A few years previously her family had purchased a holiday home, Ferryside in Bodinnick, Fowey. It marked the start of a lifelong love affair with Cornwall, a place which provided the inspiration for The Loving Spirit and so many of her subsequent books such as Jamaica Inn, Frenchman’s Creek and, of course, her masterpiece, Rebecca.
With their heady blend of high adventure, gothic romance, suspense and mystery, Daphne du Maurier’s novels continue to captivate generation upon generation of readers.
