Culloden Moor, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, is said to be one of the most haunted battle sites in the British Isles. It is certainly the most haunting.
Under the command of Charles Edward Stuart, the army that drew up against the forces of George II that bitter April 16th in 1746 consisted principally of Scottish clansmen sworn to the restoration of the Stuart monarchy.
Brief, brutal and bloody, the Battle of Culloden lasted less than an hour.
It was the last pitched battle fought on British soil and effectively marked the death not only of the approximately 1,600 followers of the “Bonnie Prince” who fell and were buried there, but the Jacobite cause itself.
