This modest Georgian terraced house in Portsmouth was the birthplace of novelist Charles Dickens in 1812, though he only lived here for his first four months.
Charles’ father, John, worked at the nearby Naval Dockyard as a clerk and had rented the property in 1809, shortly after his marriage to his wife Elizabeth.
The local newspaper carried an announcement of the birth of little Charles, placed by his proud father:
“On Friday, at Mile-End Terrace, the Lady of John Dickens Esq., a son”.
Mile-End Terrace is now known as Old Commercial Road and the house as the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum.
