William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is widely regarded as England’s greatest writer and the finest dramatist of all time.
The son of a glovemaker in Stratford-upon-Avon, he wrote plays that are known and loved worldwide for their universal themes, relevance and deep insight into the human condition.
Sometime between 1585 and 1592 he left Warwickshire to act and write in London, joining the King’s Men, a company of actors who performed at court and at their own theatre, The Globe.
When he died, aged 52, the Bard of Avon left a body of work that included 37 plays and 154 sonnets – and precious few facts concerning his own life.
