Queen Victoria (1819-1901) gave her name to an era and presided over a dynamic 63 year period of change – industrial, cultural, political, scientific and military – on a massive scale.
Her reign also saw a huge expansion of the British Empire and the creation of her title Empress of India.
She married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the couple had nine children, most of whom married into other Royal families of Europe.
Albert’s early death at 42 left Victoria bereft. She shunned public appearances for several years and dressed in mourning for the rest of
her life.
