This traditional fisherman’s cottage, built of tarred timbers, stands on an arid stretch of coast designated as Britain’s only desert area. It is the largest shingle formation (with Cape Canaveral) in the world. Prospect Cottage belonged to Derek Jarman, filmmaker, author, artist and gay rights campaigner. To that list was added “gardener” after he moved into the cottage in 1986. Strange and quirky, almost Japanese in its tranquillity, the iconic garden Jarman created in this wilderness has now become world famous. “Paradise haunts gardens and it haunts mine,” he wrote.
