Mary Stuart (1542-1587), better known as Mary, Queen of Scots, was just six days old when she acceded to the throne of Scotland.
Brought up at the French court, she was briefly queen consort of Francis II of France, but widowed within a year. Mary’s turbulent life on her return to Scotland was marked by drama, intrigue, murder and rebellion.
She was forced to abdicate in favour of her son, then fled to England where she became a focus for Roman Catholic plotters and a political pawn in the hands of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I.
Her life ended on the scaffold after 19 years of imprisonment in England. She is buried in Westminster Abbey.
