Henry VIII (1491-1547), possibly Britain’s most notorious monarch, is best known for having had six wives, two of whom were beheaded.
The Tudor King’s obsession with begetting a son and heir led to England’s break with Rome and the establishment of the Anglican Church after the Pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon in order to wed Anne Boleyn.
The youthful Henry had been celebrated as a handsome, athletic and cultured prince but with passing years he grew tyrannical, obese and diseased.
He is buried at Windsor alongside Jane Seymour, the only one of his queens to produce the longed-for son.
