Their names are forever linked to the wild sweep of the landscape surrounding their home: the Brontë sisters delighted in walking the lonely moors in all weathers, come rain, shine – or snow.
Here we see them at the close of a winter’s day, heading in the direction of home and the local church, St Michael and All Angels, where their father was vicar for more than four decades.
The ancient church was largely rebuilt, save for most of the tower, some years after the deaths of the Rev Patrick Brontë and his family. The foundation stone of the building we see today was laid on Christmas Day, 1879.
