This Augustinian priory in Nottinghamshire, which dates back to the thirteenth century, fell victim to the Dissolution of the Monasteries when it was granted to Sir John Byron by Henry VIII in 1540.
By the time Lord Byron inherited it in 1798 the building was in a ruinous state. Or as the poet put it “Thou, the hall of my fathers,
art gone to decay…”
A number of ghosts are said to haunt Newstead Abbey, most particularly disgruntled friars made homeless by Sir John, as well as a White Lady and a Rose Lady. The souls of the dead friars are said to inhabit the Abbey rooks.
