This splendid Stuart mansion by the Thames in Richmond is reputed to be one of England’s most haunted houses. Ghosts here include that of its illustrious former owner, Elizabeth, Duchess of Lauderdale.
Elizabeth’s somewhat hasty marriage to her second husband after the sudden and unexpected demise of her first prompted enduring speculations of foul play. Described in life as extravagant and unprincipled by some and evil and manipulative by others, in death the spirit of the duchess is said to roam the corridors of Ham House trailing a scent of roses. Her pet spaniel is another ghostly presence, as is that of a young man who, thwarted in love, flung himself from an upper window.
