Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926) is the longest-reigning monarch in British history, as well as the most travelled and quite possibly the best loved.
She married Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, became queen in 1952 and was crowned in 1953, in a glittering ceremony in Westminster Abbey broadcast on television for the first time and viewed by millions around the world.
Horses and dogs, especially her beloved Pembrokeshire corgis, are a passion with the Queen. One of her main leisure activities revolves around horse-racing and breeding racehorses.
When out and about Her Majesty is well-known for wearing mostly bright coloured overcoats and large hats allowing her to be easily seen in the crowd.
