More popularly known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, Italian-born Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788) was the grandson of deposed and exiled James II.
A firm believer in the divine right of kings, Charles fervently desired the restoration of the Stuart monarchy and the overthrow of the House of Hanover.
His brief 14 month Scottish adventure began after raising the royal standard at Glenfinnan in 1745, signalling the start of the last Jacobite uprising – and the Bonnie Prince’s romantic legend. Early successes were eventually wiped out by final bloody defeat at Culloden Moor on April 16th 1745 following which Charles went on the run, eventually fleeing to France. He spent the rest of his days in disillusioned obscurity on the continent.
