In 1799 Romantic poet William Wordsworth moved into Dove Cottage, Grasmere, with his sister, Dorothy. There followed years of “plain living, but high thinking”, during which time William produced much of his finest poetry and Dorothy her inspirational journals.
They were both great walkers, going out in all seasons, weathers and times of day. Rarely did a day go by without a trek in the landscape they both adored.
So here we see them returning late after a Christmas ramble with the faithful Wordsworth dog, Pepper. William’s wife, Mary, is at home and has lit the fire and candles for a warming welcome.
