This impressive Georgian townhouse In Cockermouth, Cumbria, was the birthplace of Romantic poet William Wordsworth
and his devoted sister Dorothy.
The little Wordsworths’ father was the estate manager for local landowner Lord Lowther, said to be one of the richest men in England. The big house came with the job.
The childrens’ childhood was little short of idyllic until the family was broken up following the deaths of their mother then their father. Now known as Wordsworth House, the building belongs to the National Trust.
