A Londoner born and bred, William Blake did however spend just under three years in rural surroundings in the Sussex village of Felpham. From 1800 to 1803 Blake lived in Rose Cottage which today is known as Blake’s Cottage.
While living here he worked on engravings for his friend and patron William Haley and wrote his epic poem Milton which contains the words of the anthem Jerusalem. It was in these surroundings he was visited by “celestial voices and visions”. Here we see him being dazzled by the vision of Felpham angels flying over Rose Cottage.
