Monk’s House, the East Sussex home of Leonard and Virginia Woolf, was purchased by them in 1919 as a tranquil retreat
from the hectic life of literary London.
The eighteenth century weather-boarded cottage now belongs to the National Trust. It is located in Rodmell, a Sussex village that stands sheltered by the broad sweep of the South Downs, just a few miles from Charleston Farmhouse, home of Virginia’s artist sister,
Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
Here we see Virginia arriving home and being greeted by Pinka, the much-loved spaniel given to the Woolfs by Vita Sackville-West.
