Monk’s House, in the Sussex village of Rodmell, was purchased by Leonard and Virginia Woolf in 1919 as a weekend rural retreat to escape the hectic pace of their London life. It is situated just a few miles across the downs from Charleston, the home of Virginia’s sister, the painter Vanessa Bell.
Over the years they made considerable improvements, not only to the quaint and primitive eighteenth century cottage, but also to the garden, largely Leonard’s domain.
At the garden’s end, sheltered by a huge chestnut tree, stands Virginia’s “writing lodge” where she wrote parts of all her major novels, from Mrs Dalloway to Between the Acts.
