Mary Anne Evans, better known by her future adopted pen name of George Eliot, was born on November 22, 1819, at Arbury Farm on the outskirts of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, where her father was estate manager.
The third of five children, she was destined to become one of England’s greatest writers and author of what many critics regard as the greatest novel in English literature, Middlemarch.
George Eliot only lived in this house for the first four months of her life before the family moved to a larger property. Here she is, in the arms of Christiana, her mother, with her father, Robert, enjoying her first ever Christmas in traditional baby fashion – fast asleep!
